Stress and Anxiety

Stressed?

You know that the word “stress”, as used by most people nowadays, refers to the consequences of a person’s failure to respond appropriately to actual or imagined emotional or physical threats. Let me rephrase that somewhat, Stress is your body’s way of responding to demand. It is a NORMAL physical response by your body to events and demands around you. It serves you when you need to react quickly in an emergency, or to keep you focused during that important sales meeting or to give you that extra push when studying etc.

Our wonderful body does not distinguish between  physical and psychological events when it comes to stress. The stress response is can be the same whether you face a life and death experience, a busy schedule, a divorce or any of the millions of other things out there we can stress about.

Long-term or excessive stress can cause us health problems.  Out of a stress perspective we are build to function as short distance athletes. We cope well with short bursts of stress with ample rest periods in between. We don’t cope well with long bursts of stress with no rest in between.

Do you really need examples of events that can cause the wrong kind of stress?

Social issues: Relationship Conflict, Divorce, Deaths
Life experiences: Employment changes, deadlines, job demands
And many other things

Anxiety

Anxiety is that unpleasant state you are in because of stress…It is the “normal” reaction to stress. As with stress anxiety is good in moderation but not in excess.
